Costa Rica is a fairly cheap direct flight from IAH, we go there regularly for a real vacation, Any of the normal gulf beach cities like Destin or Gulf Shores make for a great weekend getaway.

For 2-3d, there's Dallas, Austin, anything along IH10 corridor, hill country like Fredericksburg and the nearby towns, national parks, rent a water front place in Conroe or Kemah area. Go tubing in the right season.Even a staycation is nice, rent a hotel and pamper yourself with shows, restaurants, museums. 3-4d I'd fly to LA or NYC, often cheap tickets

San Antonio is much closer than New Orleans. 200 miles vs. 350 miles, respectively. And since I live in Katy, it's actually 170 miles to S.A. instead of the 380 to N.O.

If you want to have a resort experience in a larger property, you might want to consider the following:

1. Hyatt Hill Country- San Antonio
2. J.W. Marriott- San Antonio (North of town off 281, I believe)
3. Hyatt Lost Pines- Bastrop

If you want to go into the Hill Country, check out Fredericksburg. It's the largest of the Hill Country towns. You can rent private homes in (or slightly outside of) town using services such as First Class Bed and Breakfast or Gastehouse Schmidt. Other towns to consider would be Wimberly, Gruene, Boerne and Kerrville.
