I just noticed that if you want to pay your mud tax by credit card.... they really stick it to you...at least for Ft Bend(Wheeler Assoc) anyway. This charge would have been almost $70 convenience fee for close to $3k of mud tax payment. I don't paying 10 bucks or so, but $70?

You do realize why they'd charge you a fee right? Because they get charged by the card processor

That fee would be enough to break out the checkbook and dust it off.

Some cards charge over 3%. Actually, that's total of what the CC charges plus the margin the processing company added on top.

I can see why paying by credit card might be beneficial to some. Many of the cards these days comes with excellent cash back options. If the processing fee was not that high, I would pay all my property and MUD taxes with a credit card.

do the math and see if the points you get back are worth the fees. in our case, the miles we earn should be worth a lot.

Most credit card rewards average out to around 1-2% bottom line value. I've yet to see a reward high enough (and I juggle six cards just for rewards!) to make it worthwhile to pay a fee as high as governments charge. The few that are higher are usually very specific--5% at Amazon, or 3% on groceries, etc. No one has a 6% rebate on government purchases. Yet.

Not only do I not begrudge these governmental entities their fees, I appreciate it. This is not a business that I have a choice to do business with. It's the government, my government, and every card they take would take money from my pool of money.
