Is it just me or has 2015 been an unusually active year for fire ants?

I have mounds popping up all over my property and it seems like I see them around town more than in previous years. I spread some ant killer but they just don't seem to die. I'm sure much of the ant bait washed away with the recent rain but still I expected to see some result.

Anyone have a good suggestion on getting rid of these things or keeping the in check?

249 near 1960, but I see them all over near where I work which is off 290 near BW8.

I might re-treat the area if the forecast looks clear. I think they are less active in the winter as well?

Is better than crazy ants. I made a post over a year ago how to kill the crazy ants, DIY style. That approach will work for fire ants as well. Buy chemicals yourself and have at it. It does work. I think it was the Termidore stuff, spay and powder.

Try Over 'n Out, I've had great success at keeping mounds from even forming in our yard by applying this product twice a year with a broadcast spreader.

Same here.
We had the yard professionally treated twice this year and they are still popping up!
I agree with the above comment about the rain.... might be a possible issue with wiping out the treatments.
Usually the professional treatments last much longer.

Yup, great stuff, pricey but it really works. Most other stuff just makes the mounds move around.

IMO, the HOA needs to do the entire subdivision at the same time. Get some bids, figure the best then send every homeowner a bill.
