I'm a 30 something young professional and I'm moving to Houston in a few months and I'm looking for neighborhood and even apartment suggestions. I'm looking into the Galleria, Upper Kirby and River Oaks neighborhoods because they are close to work. I don't want to deal with a long commute. I'm looking for rent around $1200 or less, $1300 tops. Any suggestions about which of these neighborhoods might be best (safest, most affordable) and even decent apartment suggestions are welcome.
I don't have a lot of preferences about a neighborhood other than safety and affordability. I do like having lots of restaurant options because I like to eat out but I'm not interested in having nearby bars or clubs.
Nearby movie theater, gym and health food options are always a bonus as well.

I'm going to look at rentals in a few weeks but I'd like to get opinions from people who have spent time in these areas.

Your rental budget will be difficult to match in the areas you mentioned that are right in town. You might look just a bit West - try Fox Hall apartment complex. It's an older property but it's all bills paid and just minutes to Galleria area or downtown. It's surrounded by million dollar homes in the very tony Memorial area - zip code 77024. Good luck!
