Why not group type activities instead? That's much more wholesome and generally reliable. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a religious fanatic, but some of my best friends have come from church groups.
(Note: they are not fanatical either, or they wouldn't be my friends.)

I agree, there are a lot of folks meeting each week in sports leagues -- just pick the sport that interests you and have fun. The friendships will follow.

What do you enjoy doing, hobbies??? Just search for a local forum for the hobby and join. There's forums for just about anything in Houston. Goodluck and be safe and as mentioned above, don't assume everyone you meet is friendly or trustworthy.
