Why not group type activities instead? That's much more wholesome and generally reliable. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a religious fanatic, but some of my best friends have come from church groups.

(Note: they are not fanatical either, or they wouldn't be my friends.)

I agree, there are a lot of folks meeting each week in sports leagues -- just pick the sport that interests you and have fun. The friendships will follow.
