Hello,

I am moving to Houston Texas soon and have a couple issues in the Urology department I would like taken care of, including a hernia. I have insurance but would like to spend as little money as possible. Where would be the least expensive place to have this taken care of?

Check your insurance company's website - they have negotiated prices with different facilities and providers that you can probably view under 'estimate cost of care'. Generally speaking, if you can find a doctor that works out of a non-hospital surgery center it will be a lot cheaper.

People spend and waste money on lots of things, if you have insurance and are only looking at out of pocket for 20% that insurance doesn't cover, healthcare is the last thing I would bargain basement shop for. I would seriously consider cutting back on other things and give your health the best you can afford. As with anything else -- you often get what you pay for.

Yes! ESPECIALLY the region involved in this case. Hernia repair is much better than it was just 2 decades ago, but it is still major surgery.

Many doctors perform surgeries at both hospitals and surgical centers, and the negotiated rate (and thus your co-insurance) should be much less at a surgical center. As others noted, I wouldn't look for the cheapest surgeon, I would find the best surgeon then explore options for lowering cost.

The thing to keep in mind about surgical centers is that should something go wrong and yoy need a specialist during surgery, there usually isn't one there (ie heart attack or heart arrhythmia while under anesthesia, usually no heart or vascular doc just hanging around) and you have to be rush transferred to a full hospital. Small chance of that but it does happen.
