30% gross on housing is house poverty. After retirement and revolving savings, plus feeding 3 additional heads and a car payment, plus utilities, there's no money to actually wake up in the morning for. Unless you derive self-actualization out of four stupid walls staring at you every evening, I'd keep the housing threshold at below 20% net income. This will of course be much harder to do the closer to the cost of living line your annual salary is. Much easier to undershoot housing when you make more.

This is why you hear people spout the fallacy of Houston being affordable. It isn't, not for people who can't afford to be wasteful on housing in the first place. If you're lower middle class, I don't think Houston is a good place to throw stake. San Antonio or Fort Worth would offer higher QOL for the money. Good luck to ya.
