30% gross on housing is house poverty. After retirement and revolving savings, plus feeding 3 additional heads and a car payment, plus utilities, there's no money to actually wake up in the morning for . Unless you derive self-actualization out of four stupid walls staring at you every evening, I'd keep the housing threshold at below 20% net income. This will of course be much harder to do the closer to the cost of living line your annual salary is. Much easier to undershoot housing when you make more.
