Not what I said. You said they did it to get better average scores for the school. I said they do it for the betterment of the student. While those two paths often end at the same place, there is a significant difference in the journey.

Oddly, my mental gymnastics are the result of a public school education. How ironic, considering my vigorous defense of a private school.

A lot of the financial aid at Kinkaid seems to be reserved for underrepresented minorities and/or superior athletes the school is trying to lure away from public schools. The children of faculty and staff also get a break on tuition. You will probably find the same thing at St. John's. I do not think you hurt your admission chances by applying for aid or by stating whether both parents are employed. However, if you are middle class or above, you are unlikely to get any aid. They have plenty of applicants that match or exceed the profile of your child. As others have said, legacies get in first.

What kind of careers do people have that provide them to have $30-60k year (1-2 kids) after tax discretionary just for tuition alone?

I guess we spend $12k for private preschool but it is a great match for our son, plus we get some tax benefits on it. Still $30k is so much higher.

We decided to buy in a top notch public school zone and save the money for college.
