The other thread regarding fertilizers reminded me of how fertilizers affect "good" insects; they don't exist where I live now in Montrose, so I don't feel bad putting fertilizer down, they don't exist in most places these days unfortunately. Young fireflies (beetles) live in the ground, and come to the surface and do their thing with their lights, procreate, then die. The young live in the ground for a couple of years.

Anyway, when I first moved to Houston in 1980, I used to see them all the time. Alief, Bear Creek and and in Katy. I used to like seeing them because they did not exist where I came from, which was El Paso. But I have not seen any in decades in Houston. Just curious if you have them in your yard, or if you've seen them, and if so, what general area? It would be nice to show my kids who've never witnessed them.

probably about 25 years ago. we used to have a ton of them in our back yard. now... none. i think all the mosquitoes spraying has wiped them out. surprised the tree huggers arent all annoyed about it.

Yea Lightning bugs is what I called them as well. Haven't seen any in the Houston area in years and June bugs seem to be getting scarce as well, oh and don't forget the Doodle bugs not as many of them around either...

About 2 years ago at a guided night hike at Armand Bayou we saw a handful. The staff had scheduled a couple of tours on multiple days, so I supposed they were expecting to see more. Other than that I never see them.

4 or 5 Years ago I saw one in Surfside right in the dunes that separate the houses from the beach. I think all the chemical plants killed all the fireflies off. When I go to Kansas I see a lot of them and they have no chemical plants.

I saw a few for awhile around my house, probably in the 2007-2009 timeframe (Clear Lake area). I also saw some of the species of click beetles with luminescent eyes. That were weird; seeing two glowing dots moving around on the ground. I probably still have pictures somewhere, along with at least one video of them at night.
