My wife and I are 27. She has a job in Teaching disabled children and I have a job as an engineer and drafter. She makes close to 33,000 and I make around 68,000. We are looking for a spot that has a small town feel and is in the north side of Houston. By chance we discovered The Woodlands, She really like spots that are walkable and has nice places to eat on the weekend. It felt to us like a huge camp ground up in northern Wisconsin and has city like things to do.

We worked hard but are thinking of getting a nice apartment here. We are looking for an area where we can fit in because we like the park activities that the little town offers and the other places to enjoy the outdoors. To be honest we are also looking for an area to make friends at coffee shops and such and are not going to be overly assuming of people of disabilities.

I don't live there but I do love the place.

My guess is that if you get involved in a local club, hobby or church, you won't have issues making friends.

To me, it seems most people don't tend to be that open to people they meet in places like coffee shops. People warm up with exposure, so the more you're around the same people, the more likely you become more social with them.

Good luck.

Where will you and your wife be working? There are a lot of suburbs around Houston with a small town feel while also having big city amenities. I would suggest finding the one close to your job. The Woodlands can be very expensive and while you have a decent income you might be able to live more comfortably in one of the northwest suburbs like Cypress or Tomball.

We live in The Woodlands. Yes, The Woodlands does have some very walkable areas like Market Street and Hughes Landing. And, it does have coffee shops and cafes.

But, it is not a small town. It is a sprawling suburb. You won't keep on bumping into people you know at those places. You will need to arrange to meet those friends.

If you want a sense of community in The Woodlands, you will probably need to get engaged with a smaller group of people, for example through a religious or other community based organizations. And, once you make those connections, having the walkable areas will be a great place to meet.

In terms of accepting people, the people who live in TW are primarily educated professionals. So, I think you would have as good a shot as any place in Texas of having an accepting community.

I'm curious what mental disabilities you have. I mean you can work both as an engineer and a draftsman yet you have mental disability?

The Woodlands is a nice community with a great walk-able downtown, but not from areas that have inexpensive housing....to be able to live in a reasonably priced home, AND walk to community activities, you might want to look at Tomball, Spring, maybe even Conroe... Tomball has been having a lot of great festivals lately. Old Town Spring has a lot going on.

I will be working in Spring. The prices from what I am gathering is really not that much higher than other areas.

Good question. She has a cognitive disability that is harder for daily living and I have a disability that is more high functioning. Learning disability also.
