So you think your rent is to high in Houston ? Compared to other large cities in Texas and elsewhere Houston is very affordable.

Houston renters don't have to work as long to cover the rent payment as residents in Dallas or Austin do, according to a new study by SmartAsset.
The financial website ranked the 25 largest cities, factoring in estimated hourly wages after taxes, and median rents using U.S. Census data. Residents of San Jose, Calif. need to work the longest -- 97.2 hours -- to make the rent.

Personally, I find Houston's rent ridiculous if you compare it to the state's minimum wage.

I think that's applicable to most (every?) major city though?

Yep, that's more of a reflection of the inadequate nature of the Federal minimum wage than a reflection on Houston's rent prices.

The way I see it, every single major city that offers a better urban experience than Houston does is more expensive. Many cities that offer a lesser urban experience than here are more expensive. It offers a good value for what you get imo.

Please tell me a large city where it is better. People who work in the San Fran, NYC, Chicago areas, etc., have to be bused in. That includes police and teachers.

There is a lot of in-migration from smaller towns in the south and Midwest, and they certainly bring that mentality here. It is the biggest reason why you see complaints about “high rent”. On the flip side those from the northeast, west coast or Chicago have no complaints. And it has always been this way. Sure there are hot areas and declining areas but Houston has always had a pretty balanced market that has always sat in the middle.

Also remember someone with a modestly good income is not having an additional $400-800/mo shaved right off the top here in the form of state and municipal income taxes.

We learned very early, what you save on housing in Houston is spent on transportation.

Also in some places, property tax a city earning tax plus a state income tax is cheaper than property tax in Houston.

Somehow the governments get what they want.

The northeast is not one such area. They have property taxes equal or greater to Houston’s on top of a more expensive appraisal. But no matter, we are talking about rents here right?
