I am looking fir a spot where a couple 13 year olds can ride a 110cc bike. They can handle the bike OK but are not looking for some motor sports complex just yet. Just a large field or something until they get more comfortable. I have done a ton of searches and the closest thing I can find that fits this description is Sam Houston National forest. However due to the governement shutdown the office is closed and I am not sure if the tracks are open today and a 75 mile ride is a bit far to find out the park is closed (today).

Anybody know a spot within maybe an hour or so of town that a couple kids can ride around on a dirt bike?

Thanks

There's Rio Bravo MX park that has tracks and trails. I don't recall them having just a field to ride in though. There's also Three Palms with some tracks. You've already found the forest. There are also some trails in the Cypress area that are decent. Again, I don't remember if they have an open space that you could ride it. Some other areas are Hidden Falls Adventure Park and trails near Bastrop. You might check out some areas over off 90 near the San Jac. There's a place called Xtreme Off Road Park and Beach. There looks to be a field there, but not sure. That area can also be sandy, and riding in sand is something else.

It should be easy to find a field somewhere to let kids ride around a little to get used to it. I've known some people to ride the areas running along the big power lines. I doubt it's legal, and I'm not advising it, but if you're just letting kids ride a little to get started...judgement call. Maybe check out motohouston.com or twtex.com to look around for places.
