Hi! My husband and I (and our 3 children, 14, 11 & 6) are job-relocating from the Kansas City metro to the Houston area this summer!
I work from home and my husband has a home office with frequent air travel.
(Is the need for good internet still a thing or does everyone have that now!?).
We are hoping to stay within 30-45 minutes of the airport (Bush).
good schools but super competitive/the very best aren’t a necessity
Some Space (3/4 acre or more)
We do like to “go” so community activities, reasonably close shopping/restaurants would be lovely.
Under $500

The sheer size and diversity not to mention flooding risks is a bit overwhelming! We will be traveling for a week in July to house hunt, and hoped to have some focus areas picked out ahead of time. Can you help a momma out?

To get that lot size at that budget you will need to go far north of town. Look at areas like new caney or north of the woodlands. The schools wont be the best but will be okay as long as you dont mind rednecks and pentecostals. You can search using the har app or har.com. There is also forest cove and Kings Forest in Kingwood but much of those areas flooded in Harvey so depends on how willing you are to deal with such things.

If you can give up the 3/4acre request you’ll easily find something you like here.

Houston is very far spread out. And our suburbs/exurbs aren’t known to have lots that large. So you’d really have to drive out of your way to get that 3/4 acre. If it isn’t that crucial, I’d give that requirement up first thing.

We have big houses on small lots. It’s just the way it’s done here.

Thanks! 3/4 acre is not a big deal, and easily given up. We’d just prefer to not live on top of our neighbors, but otherwise we are flexible!

If you dont need the huge lot I would look into The Woodlands. Can get decent sized lots for suburbs, stay closer to 45 for easier drive to IAH. Example here: https://www.har.com/u/78B2d62b53

Where do you live in the KC metro? I presume from your username you are on the KS side? I lived in Overland Park until I was 8, so I am somewhat familiar with that area and know the best suburbs in KC metro are on that side.

I would echo what the above posters have said. The Woodlands, Kingwood, Porter (to a lesser extent) etc would give you a similar quality of life to the KS suburbs, and they are close to the airport. The Woodlands, in particular, has good schools.

What's the reason for the move?
