Not sure about people that have TxTag
but people that have EzTag can easily check their account and see how much money they spent on toll roads in 2019

For me = $555 ($46/month)

I haven't checked, but I imagine it's on the order of $10-20. I don't rely on the toll roads for daily commuting, but I do appreciate them when I'm running late for a flight or an event halfway across town.

None. I avoid toll roads whenever possible. As many freeways Houston has, there's really no reason to use toll roads.

When I look for a house, being trapped by toll roads is a strike against considering a neighborhood.

I chose Cinco Ranch over Waterside Estates more than 15 years ago mostly because it had an existing grocery store (the Kroger on Mason @ Westheimer Pkwy), and poor road connections to Houston with the Grand Parkway mainlanes incomplete. Good thing I didn't move to Waterside because the overpasses became tolled!

Eventually the first Kroger Marketplace in Texas was built in the neighborhood. (Though the furniture store did not last! Ironically, the area has been a hotbed of furniture retailing ever since Gallery opened the FBC store.)

I'm the same way,
but now I have 2 options on my way to work
get on the toll road, pay a little more than $1 and go through only 3 street lights
or go through almost 20 street lights on my way to work.

If it wasn't for that, I would almost never get on a toll road.

Do you know any shorter routes other than the toll road to get where you need to go?

I can take other routes, but they will take longer
I feel like Harris County/city of Houston makes sure that alternative roads are s.... to make sure that people have to use the toll roads.

Anything on the map that looks like it could easily be an alternative .... they made sure to not connect them.
Such as Fallbrook Dr on the NW side of the Beltway.
and any alternative, they put 1000 lights.
