Houston Rodeo cancelled over coronavirus concerns, prompted by Montgomery County case

Mayor Sylvester Turner announced Wednesday the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo will close due to concerns about coronavirus, citing a presumptive positive case found in a Montgomery County man with no recent travel history.
Turner said he will sign an emergency health declaration Wednesday and had ordered the closure of the massive, three-week event and concert series, which routinely draws more than two million visitors each year.
Rodeo officials said they were “deeply saddened” but agreed with the city’s move to cancel the livestock show and rodeo.

"As hard as this is to do, it is the right thing to do,” said Joel Crowley, president and chief executive of the Rodeo.

Extreme measures are being taken all over the country. The Texas Rangers / Seattle Mariners opening season series will be played outside of Seattle due to Corona Virus. They are still trying to figure out where. The Golden State Warriors and Brooklyn Nets will be playing basketball in an empty stadium tomorrow night.

This reminds me of 9/11 type stuff...

It is sad for the teenagers who put the time in as well as the business owners who rely on the event, but it seems like a responsible decision. The spread really seems to be taking a toll locally. I know a couple of the private schools decided to shut down a few days earlier than their scheduled Spring Break, and some private schools have started talking about not not hosting their follow-up admissions events for accepted students. It sounds like middle and high schools are also ramping up discussions of "distance-learning." Amazing how quickly perception changes -I know the Rodeo committee was certain that they wouldn't be closing down just a couple of days ago.

It might be the "responsible thing to do", but man this one hurts.

Was that going to be played here or San Antonio?

It sucks, yes, but was the right move. Hopefully the Rodeo can take place at a later date.

We were at the Rodeo today when they shut down. Got there just past Noon and were walking into the Carnival when we heard people talking about it. Fortunately, we hadn't yet bought tickets to anything, though many people around us had. Turned around and walked back out and jumped on the train to the parking lot.

I heard they were planning on honoring all 2020 scholarship obligations and will be refunding show tickets. Now sure about any other refunds as of yet.

i think they made the right decision and probably should have done this earlier. We waffled on whether to go or not, but the Rodeo was part of our staycation Plan B after cancelling a cruise over the weekend that departed out of Galveston today and we were trying to have as much local fun as possible.

From a legal standpoint, yeah this had to be done in the current environment.

I do think the odds of Coronavirus transmission at the rodeo would have been almost non existent though.
