Believe it or not, there are people from the sticks who have never been to a beach who go to Galveston thinking it's South Beach or something.

Tourists come here every year and love it. I grew up going to Galveston and Freeport and always got in the water. However, after visiting places with turquoise/emerald/clear water and sugar, powdery sand - now when I go, it is to do other fun things but not get into the water.

The clarity of the water here varies greatly depending on the strength and direction of the wind. It can look like chocolate milk, but I have swum in gin clear water on more then one occasion.

My preferences are: The Quintana Beach County Park which does not get as crowded as the other beaches; Surfside which is very convenient because you can drive out on it; Galveston Island State Park which is very easy to get to from where I live. Many residents of Houston hate the Texas coast. I am happy not to share this resource with them.

Default HAlf Ironman swim in Galveston any comments?

Looking for a nice saltwater swim for the 70.3( half Ironman) in Glveston on April 22nd. Whats the water like for the event in April? Any comments appreciated? This is my first saltwater swim , would like something besides murky lake swims. I swam recently in Palm Beach and loved the bouyancy of the saltwater...as opposed to the lakes I've competed in.

You've resurrected a 2 year old post - you might want to start a new thread relating directly to looking for water for ironman competitions.

Bolivar Peninsula is pretty cool. I prefer it to Galveston.
