Hi, we're new in town and are looking for a decent mechanic. We've already been ripped off once. Just having a problem with the brakes and would like to get a recommendation. I live in the SW part of Houston, inside the Loop. I'd like to stay on this side of town since I don't have another car but would go to Bellaire. Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!

Brake Check

The only company I've ever used.

Also, you can schedule online and save money!

Tip: If you use Just Brakes, their pads will dirty up your front rims in about a week.

Actually, this seems standard for anyone who buys a car over $40k.

My dad went to a Just Brakes about eight years ago or so and never went back. The reason? They didn't even replace his pads or anything, but still stuck him for the bill.

I've heard good things about Christian Brothers Automotive. They have locations all over town.

Just Brakes will be the cheapest... assuming they don't find $600 of other repairs to do besides pads/shoes. That's what it was when I went to Just Brakes. I ended up having the high school kids at the school where I worked do the repairs, which were about $250 in parts ($almost $200 of that was new drums, they were worn out).

Just fore-warning you... a higher-than-expected price isn't always a cheat on brakes. If you've let them go too long, it can be expensive.

Unfortunately that's how these quick stop car places roll sometimes. You literally have to get up in their grills and make sure they're doing their job.

A little self-education regarding how cars work can go miles, too.
