Hi dear fellow Houstonians,

I'm relatively new to Houston (been living here for a year) and I've been to the Galveston beaches a couple of times with friends. I was never the organizer though so basically I just followed the crowd around etc.

I'm planning to take my 2 younger teenager bros to spend the weekend @ Galveston. Will probably check in a hotel on Friday afternoon and leave on Sunday night. So can you help me plan this weekend?

First of all do you think the hurricane Gustav will have any effect on this trip (checked the forecasts etc and it seems by weekend everything's clear.).

I'm thinking about definitely spending lots of time on a beach (and which beach is the best? East beach? Or some Stewart beach park?). Then maybe taking the ferry somewhere (Other than crab catching, what are other interesting activities at nearby ferry destination?). Maybe a trip to the Schlitterbahn waterpark?

Anyway your suggestions would be appreciated. Also if someone can put up a list of gears you usually bring for a quick vacation in Galveston it would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, well you can definitely be sure Gustav is gone now and won't affect Galveston. Thank goodness!!

I have to tell ya, if you're going to spend the money, I would rent a cottage. We stayed an extended weekend at a wonderful place called The Olive Cottage and I wouldn't stay anywhere else. You can see my pics here:

We had a great time!

I recommend Stewart Beach. Very nice and well-kept. You can rent chairs and umbrellas for $20 or bring your own for free. Admission is $8. Very family-friendly and safe.

The ferry is free. You can take it to Bolivar Peninsula and back in about 45 minutes to an hour. It is really kind of neat, because there are usually a few dolphin pods you can see along the way. I always enjoy doing that!

The closest grocery is Arlan's, get local raw seafood at Katie's (Pier 21) and visit the Peanut Butter Warehouse right off the Strand. Enjoy the very best Cookies-n-Cream ice cream made at La King's on the Strand. Gracie's is probably my favorite store of all time down there!

Schlitterbahn is awesome, and of course Moody Gardens (I love the Aquarium Pyramid).

Have fun and take lots o' pics!!
