Hello, My family and I are strongly thinking of moving to Houston and I keep reading that Katy, Sugarland, Missouri City, the Woodlands and a couple others are good places to live. That being said what is the low down on these assults and home invasions? Does it happen that often in these areas where it is a serious problem. Please, your honesty is appreciated becasue I do NOT want to move my family and children into violence beyond a once in a while occurence. I guess my question is, does this happen consistently in these suburbs I mentioned. Thank you for your help.

I see a report on the news every few months or so, no idea if that is indicative of the frequency or just the news being the news. Odds are it would never happen to you or anyone you knew, but it happens to *someone* and for them statistics are meaningless. Maintaining situational awareness is important no matter where you live.

Not very common at all. The odds of it happening to you are basically zero.

I don't know anyone, anywhere to whom this has happened, ever.... and I've lived in the Houston area directly and the suburbs for 12 years now. From a thief's perspective, breaking into an empty house is a lot safer and they can take their time looking for goods. But, your odds here are not great in any city. For that, I'd just say install good locks and install a monitored alarm system and do your best to keep seriously valuable items put away or in bank safe deposit boxes. That would be true in any city or even a rural area.

After the initial news stories about home invasions, there are usually more details that come out that indicate that the target family was not random. In one home invasion, it turned out that the Sugar Land family where the victims were beaten and robbed were running a jewelry business out of their home. In another Sugar Land news story, a home was broken into and a man was stabbed by a former employee who had been accused of theft from the business. (In that situation, the guy's wife saved his life by fighting back with a baseball bat).

Not that those are good things to happen, but these are different scenarios than gangs of robbers and killers roaming the streets looking for random houses to enter and victims to attack.

50 years ago unheard of in houston. 130000 of NO not so finest moving to houston, and the criminalization of self defense created this sorry state of human affairs. personal injury suits should be abolished if occurring in the commission of a crime.

I agree with previous posters in that there is really very little random crime, especially home invasions.

Almost without fail, there are some mitigating circumstances where there was a motivation to target a specific home or individual.

it really don't matter now that you put it like that, because crime is everywhere.
