Couple of questions. I can't remember how Houston and Texas do their car tags.

I remember there is an inspection of some sorts. What does that involve, and how much/how often?

If I remember correctly, there are like 4 places you have to go to get everything you need to drive in TX. What are those places?

How much do the tags cost?

Also, I have a "SRS" light on in my 2001 Honda Accord. My mechanic here says its a glitch in the light, because the system checks out okay (its for seatbelts/airbags). Would the city not approve my car if a light is on?

Also, are the inspections just for Harris county, or for surrounding counties as well?

Thanks!!

Houston has nothing to do with it at all, it's all the state.

Tags will cost about $60.00 a year.

Inspection is around $29.00 a year...I don't remember for sure but it's around there.

The light will have to be fixed...and if it's just the light that shouldn't cost to much. But you will have to have that fixed before you can get the inspection sticker.. Get it fixed or you will still have to pay for the inspection even if the car is turned down.

I'm not sure of what all you have to do to transfer the car title to Texas or what it will cost. But I'm pretty sure you have to have the inspection first.

I think title transfers are still done at the county court house or a county court house sub station.

Not sure what you will have to do about getting a
Texas DL.

And all counties have safety inspections, plus some have the pollution inspection and some don't..Harris county does.

Good luck.

There are two stickers you need for your vehicle to drive in TX - registration (you register you car your counties tax assesors office, the cost varies on the car, but I think it is about $50-60 generally for the sticker, license plate to switch to TX is more, but I can't remember) and your inspection sticker.

You can take it to pretty much any shop and they will inspect your car to make sure it is running up to par. There are some pretty crazy rules with it, so if you have any questions, ask the shop ahead of time, because they will charge you to inspect it (I think it is about $50), whether or not you get the sticker.

You have to have insurance to get it inspected. And they will not pass it with a light on. Sometimes you have to take the car into the dealer to get them to reset the light - maybe try that??

The 4 places... I would assume are the DPS/DMV office (for TxDL), the county tax asseors office (registration), the auto shop (inspection) and maybe and insurance office if you buy it that way?

Best way to be sure is to call the Harris county tax collectors office or maybe it's on line...They would also be able to tell what all you need to do and in what order...

Cost of registration goes by weight of the vehicle. Tx is really cheap compared to other states.
