Hello. I have been lurking on the Houston forum for months and I'm really enjoying reading the discussions. I thought I would finally ask a question.

My family and I live in Rice Military and for the most part love it. My 4 yr old son goes to a private preschool and will attend Elementary school there too because we prefer Montessori and because of the quality of the schools we are zoned to.

We are zoned to Memorial Elementary school near Memorial park. According to HAR.com, this school's majority is economically disadvantaged Hispanics (Hispanics: 86%, disadv: 89%). This school is surrounded by million dollar homes. In Rice Military and Crestwood, I see no evidence of "economically disadvantaged" children. So I guess I am confused about the demographics of this school and how they came about. Anyone have insight on this?

There's your answer. I'm guessing most kids who live in million dollar homes attend private school, and possibly some of the better magnets, leaving their zoned public schools to those in dollar homes. There are also a lot of single, childless people in the townhouses in that area. Add a lot of low-income Hispanics in some of the areas just across I-10 and in the pre-gentrification houses and apartments close by, and voila!

I thought that school was an exemplary school? Or am I getting confused with the one in the Camp Logan area?

Go to http://www.city-data.com/, type in your zip code, and you'll get a ton of very interesting data about your neighborhood. I hadn't realize that more than 50% of kids in my zip code attend private school.

dont mean to wake up an old thread, but my question is very similar to this post. I was also wondering about the high hispanic population at memorial elementary.

Can somebody please add some of the private schools in or close to Rice Military, we are planning to move to Rice military with our 3 yo daughter, and need to start looking for preschools and elementary schools in the future. thanks.

We live in Rice Military and send our 4 year to School of the Woods Montessori on Wirt. Its not extremely close but not a bad drive. The school goes through high school.

If you don't mind catholic schools - St. Theresa's is an excellent private school. It is located in Memorial Park.

Memorial Elementary School is slowly losing students, but in 2005 it gained students after a school closed and consolidated into Memorial Elementary.

You can see the demographics here: Memorial Elementary School, Houston Texas / TX school information and ethnic makeup

It has been mostly Hispanic since at least 1989
