Is this a good move for the Harris County Hospital District?

“While it was not an easy decision to make, the proposed sale of our Southwest hospital to the Hospital District is the right thing to do for the community. It is in keeping with our mission to improve the health of the people in Southeast Texas and it will allow us to focus on expanding our services to people in the communities we serve,” said Dan Wolterman, CEO, Memorial Hermann Healthcare System.
In other words, "The hospital wasn't making any money and most of the people in the community don't have medical insurance so we want out of this neighborhood."

It's a win-win for all. Memorial loses an albatross and HCHD gains a new facility for a fraction of the cost of construction.

again who pays for the people that do not have insurance? Even in socialized countries, you pay first and get reimbursed by the government.

Default I feel for the homeowners in the immediate area

'Not good for the home owners, that is certain. Much of people who go there already do not pay, or can't keep up with payments, so as a previous poster said, it is a win-win deal. It will become, if not already, the next Ben Taub of the burbs.

I wonder who's going to pay for that glitzy "Heart and Vascular Institute" they built 3-4 years ago...

So does this mean MH Sugar Land will become a REAL hospital?

Well - if all these health care reforms go through - this will probably be the only type of hospital than any of us will be able to get health care from -- Memorial Hermann is just selling out and getting a jump start on the future.
