It just means the posters on that particular thread like to ride upon cliche, oft-repeated statements. It doesn't mean that my words don't properly describe Houston.

Well, my notion of Houston being a subtropical paradise, along with the rest of the coastal Southeastern US, comes from it being blessed with copious rainfall, having a general warm climate, and exhibiting lush vegetation (cultivated, and throughout natural landscape).

Why isn't Houston a paradise in your book?

A pointless question, since his perception of paradise is no more valid than your own.

It's not. Maybe you're just fragile.

Well, lemme see. Paradise is a place a lot of people would spend thousands to travel across the globe to go visit, not because they have family there or attending some event. Paradise is place with breath-taking views that make you want to gaze for countless hours, not glance and say, "Hmm, that's nice." Paradise is a place that provides a unique experience/vibe, worthy of travel that you can't get elsewhere. So you tell me, what does Houston have that makes it paradise? I'll tell you Houston is a great, affordable place to raise a family. Like any other city, it has some beautiful areas, and some, well, not so much. If I want paradise, I'll hop on a plane. I'm not gonna pretend I live in one. You are the first person in my whole entire life to ever, and I mean ever, to refer to Houston as paradise. Good on you. You must live a rosy life. If Houston is paradise, then heaven must be just around the corner...

So you taking into consideration the other factors of Houston (built environment, infrastructure, etc), to make your judgement; in regards to certain of these aspects, Houston does need improvement, not denying that. But based on your requirements, I'm guessing that you would consider NYC paradise, right?

Houston is blessed with a gentle, warm, humid subtropical climate that yields plentiful yearly rainfall, giving rise to the sheer diversity of lush, beautiful subtropical flora seen all throughout the city/metro. Houston is thus, essentially, an Eden, along with the rest of the coastal Southeast (New Orleans, Charleston, Savannah, Tampa, Miami, etc).

Weather in paradise:

March - Good grief, are we already having 80 degree days? We went from the 60s to the 80s seemingly overnight. Where is spring? I'd love to be outside, but there is all this yellow pollen covering everything that won't let me breathe without an inhaler.

April - Since the humidity has matched the temps, I'm sweating through my T shirts. Better go to the beach for a refreshing swim now before the water reaches 85 degrees as well. Eating outside in the evening is nice . . . as long as I have citronella candles to chase away the mosquitoes.

May - It's heeeeer! Hot and humid days, so I'm taking the show indoors. I'm afraid of my AC bill.

June - I was right to be afraid of my AC bill. And now it's going to get worse. Sure looks inviting outside. Wish I could enjoy being out there but "sweat-fest" is in full force. At least we have cable to entertain us. And all the bugs have come inside to keep us company.

July - OMG - I just returned from the store! The car seat was soooo hot when I got back in and sat on it. Ouch - so was the steering wheel! Hope the ice cream doesn't melt before I get home.

August - When is this going to end? 95 degrees and unbearable humidity!!! Please don't make me cut the grass, honey! I'm a sticky mess after being outside only 5 minutes. And my AC bill!!

September - I'm so depressed. I just talked to my friends up north who are enjoying football under a crisp sun at 70 degrees. I went to the game yesterday, but no way was I going to tailgate. Get me inside that domed stadium ASAP! Even the evenings are still sticky.

October - It's supposed to be cool, right? The leaves are supposed to turn colors, right? The sun is supposed to stop beating down on me, right? Then why is it still in the 90's? I'd give anything to wear a light-weight jacket. And what's with all this ragweed - thank goodness for my inhaler!

November - What a relief it is! It's so nice to finally be able to go outside again. Too bad daylight saving time is over and it's dark when I get home from work.

December - Let's turn up the AC so we can light a fire and get in the holiday spirit!!! "In the meadow we can build a snowman" . . . well, we can sing about it.

January - Why is it so dark, damp, cool and rainy?

February - Hey, it's nice outside! Too bad this month only has 28 days. Maybe I can make a deal with my higher power: "I'll do anything if you can keep March from rolling around again!

Ain't life in paradise grand!!

My definition of paradise is not limited to what I posted. I don't have the time or the inclination to write a whole essay on it. And yes, NYC can be considered paradise to some (not me), skyscraper paradise. I wouldn't argue with that. One final question and I'm done addressing your posts. Do you know anyone else who would describe Houston as paradise? Based on conjecture alone, I would wager that the vast majority, even extreme boosters (with you as an exception), would not use paradise as a definition of Houston. Hey, this is all opinion...but if there was a poll, I'd win in a landslide. Eden? LOL. Now we're really reaching. You sound like a person who needs to travel the world a little more. Naivety is a blessing, I guess.

Now you've taken it to the other extreme. So far, this year has been very pleasant. Even the mosquitoes have been somewhat at bay.
