I worked in Uptown from '05 to some of '08 and it is still my home base while I am working the jobsite in P.A., so I still get info about what goes on over there. I have visited the Galleria as far back as I can remember as a pre-teen and those shady-looking characters & young hoochies have always been hanging around there, especially during Xmas, spring break and the summertime. (So you can cut the Katrina excuse already.) Property crime has always been high even in broad daylight, and there is always an escalation in more violent crime during December due to the holidays (i.e. opportunity). In December they always remind us it's not worth getting stabbed/mauled/shot/killed over our vehicles, gifts, jewelry, etc. So a story like this is not surprising to me at all. Although from what the long-time office workers say, the area is much improved vs the way it was in the 1980s.

I wonder if there is a connection between the stabbing at the Galleria and the shooting at First Colony today?

And Happy New Year's to you too. Perhaps for 2010 you can get on an anti-aggression resolution.

I wonder if this story will "disappear" from the news media web sites as fast as the Galleria story did?

You know as city planners and developers let malls in sketchy areas deteriorate - those same thugs just move to your part of town and the nicer malls. The city really needs to keep up malls in declining areas -- keep shoppers safe and offer good stores or else this is the kind of stuff that happens..... Keep up Gulfgate area, Northline, Almeda, Northwest, Sharpstown but instead two of those were just redeveloped into strip center shopping with no real anchor stores to keep people there.

But can they open a coconut without dropping their gun on the head of a mexican? That is the real question at hand in Houston.

I would say its very likley that they knew each other. Nearly all violent crimes are committed by people that know the attacker. Even if its proven to be gang related I would not feel in danger there. Most gang members don't go to malls and attack random people. Most of their crimes are against other gang members or people they know. Your more likley to die in a car wreck going to Galleria than being stabbed there.
