I read elsewhere on the Internet that there is a fall-out shelter under the Downtown Foley's/Macy's location on Main Street that can hold 30,000 people. Does anyone know more about this or possibly what it looks like down there? I heard a local TV station did a story on it a while back.

Looks like there is:

Houston Heritage (http://www.houstontx.gov/hr/savvy/archive/spring06/spg06_heritage.htm - broken link)

Macy's (Houston Downtown) : 1110 Main Street, Houston, Texas :: Glass Steel and Stone

Never been in there but I have been in the basement where they used to have their discount center about 25 years ago.

I would dearly like to get down there and have a look for myself.

A trip to Macy's downtown is a little like a deserted post holocaust dystopia in any case.

Despite being an avid eBayer, and slightly agreeing with that statement, I personally love going there to visit. It's emblematic of Southern post World War II department stores.

I love it as well. No other customers to get in my way, friendly staff who are just pleased to see another human face and a great old dept store feel.

Bought all my sleepwear, cheapo furniture and other tat from there and will continue to do so.

I was thinking more of the surrounding area and those that frequent it more than just macys although I do wonder sometimes if I'm the last customer on earth when I'm in there.

Is Macy's connected to the tunnel system? I wonder if they get a lot of noon-time business with workers on their lunch break.

It is kind of a shame (but not unusual) that downtown seems so void of retail. Seems like if they could get some other good major stores that were not at the Galleria it might draw people back in. I won't hold my breath for that happening.

The downtown Macy's has plenty of business from what I see when I go sometimes during the day.

They are slowly trying to change that with the Houston Pavilions, which I went to check out a few weeks ago and was severely disappointed. A lot of the spaces still had their "coming soon" signs yet or were still up for grabs. The only store that appeals to me is the Books A Million which fortunately is at the southwest corner at street-level. However, I guess we must take into account how crappy overall commercial RE market is now nationally. There's also Houston Center (which a lot of people don't know about) but whether or not that counts as a full-fledged retail spot is up to debate.

Now it is. It became connected a few years back with the opening of 1000 Main Street.

It's more properly called The Park Shops at Houston Center. It seems nowadays that they want to be called The Shops at Houston Center.
