I moving from N California to Houston, I recently called the Harris county tax office to find out more about property tax exemptions. I was told that if you are 100% disabled/disabled veteran that you can apply for a Property tax exemption.

The way it works is when they do a county appraisal on your home they subtract $146000 from your home's appraisal and base your property tax on the adjusted figure. If your home is not worth $146000 you only have to pay very minimal taxes based on the district you live in.

Im trying to get feedback from Houston homeowners who recieve this tax exemption or know somebody that does.

Its done the same way in California but I only save about 33% on my property tax. The county subtracts $148000 from my homes current value which is about $325000(3br 2 bth 1400sqft) but I know I could find a house similar to mine for about $125000 in Houston.

That is interesting that you just posted that--I too am trying to find out about this, but I am wondering about having a disabled dependent rather than myself being disabled.

Hopefully someone will answer.

You should call

They are very patient and take the time to give you the most information they can offer. I cant believe how nice Harris county workers are compared to California county workers. California county workers rush you off the phone and tend to be very noisy in the backround.

Default 100% va comp rating + addtl. savings besides prop. tax

in addition to the prop. taxes being lessened, a 100% rating puts a cap on school taxes increasing for waller county. home is in williamsburg settlement, katy, tx.

also, a tot. and permanent rating can help ones case to have college loans forgiven.

It can't be for your disabled dependent. It has to be the homeowner and you had to serve in wartime (very specific dates) or you only get the $250.00 veteran property tax rebate. It's helps.

If the homestead laws are still in effect, you can just not pay your property taxes. My brother can't afford the taxes, so he doesn't pay and that means that some day, when he dies, the state takes the property. Or if he sells, all those taxes become due immediately.
