I bet anything that school district rating are manipulated by land developers to scare people into buying in expensive neighborhoods.

From 7th-9th grade I went one of the worst schools in the city where I grew up
I moved to a small town in Missouri with a school with great ratings and I graduated with a 3.5GPA and went to engineering school.

On another note, you should consider the rating criteria used in the various public school rankings. I've found that many heavily weigh metrics that are completely unimportant to me as a parent. Schools with large numbers of "economically disadvantaged" students often receive extra points, for example. This may be useful in terms of trying to rank which schools have teachers doing the best they can with what they get (in terms of student demographics), but for my purposes it just distorts the results.

On the other hand, there is something to be said for avoiding the most intensely competitive schools if you want your kid to have a better class ranking and thus have a better shot at the two big state universities (for whom the 10% rule is a very limiting factor). If you are really set on sending your kid to A&M or UT, then the ideal school is one where they can get a good education if they apply themselves, but also one where not everybody is hyper competitive academically.
