It is probably less costly to pay fines and retrieve 30% of the free flowing oil than to permanently seal it off and start over the well from scratch. Unfortunately it probably all boils down to $$$

Because it is a bit more technical than "hey lets just put a quick cap on this"

My opinion, and my opinion only:

This is a $10BN+ revenue generating well that BP didn't WANT to plug if they could avoid it. So, in the beginning they were trying to save the well if at all possible. Valuable time passed and now they're screwed.

Just sayin'...

Anybody who thinks that they are trying to save the well is insane. The second that the relief well drilling started, this well was dead. If they could seal it, they would have.

Going up is easy because you only need to deal with air and gravity. Going down is very difficult. Just think how much more dense water and soil are than air. They put up enormous amount of pressure and heat.

Just think we fly all over the world but hardly do any underground travel, comparatively speaking.

What I cannot understand is why there's no relief well to begin with? Shouldn't they always drill 2 at the same time?
