It wasn't Bob Barron who said that; it was Gary Dobbs on WAAY-31. And he's still saying it on 31 during the lunch-time news. Somebody should put up a Web site of his toupees and loud jackets over the years.

That refers to the old "The Mall," Huntsville's second official enclosed mall (Heart of Huntsville was first). That was the actual name. Parts of the mall still exist...as the ToysRUs and Books-a-Million stores. The Mall's central fountain is still spouting, elsewhere on the property, neart Costco.

And that isn't the original airport either. There used to be an airport southwest of Whitesburg and Bob Wallace. The old one on Airport Road (now soccer fields) was opened in 1941. It closed around 1968 after the current HSV aiport opened around 1967.

Neat stuff here:

I suspect Dobbs and Baron and nearly every other tv weather man has said that...but I remember Baron as being the one who did it with this little almost sing-song "motion".

The old airport off Airport Road has gotten a lot of use over the years as part of the police academy, an (un)official dragstrip, and rc airstrip, tornado testing ground, etc.
