This morning, there was a power outage just west of Rideout on University. I was on Perimeter Parkway with a dark light. Not even flashing yellow or red. In Florida, if a light was out, it became a four way stop. No such thing on University. All the drivers were taking advantage of no light to speed through. As I was waiting for a break to get across, a car decided to run into me. Not having a red light unfortunately is not the same thing as having a green light.

What is the rule in Alabama? Why isn't it a four way stop when lights are out and there are no policemen? I feel sorry for the woman that ran into my two week old car but am really ticked at Huntsville police for not putting a policeman at the intersection (there were two policemen at next intersection) and for Huntsville drivers that don't know how to handle dark lights.

It's the same law in Alabama, and it's usually one of the things driver are tested on. But some people took that driver's test a LONG time ago. And there were probably many other lights out that police were tending to. They may not have had enough officers to be at every light, or they hadn't had time to get there.

I'm sorry - it sucks. You'd think she'd be charged with running a stop sign, but a lot of times if there are no injuries and both drivers have insurance, the police don't want to do the paperwork.

Yeah.. it is the same in FL.. Many ppl knew they were suppose to stop but because the car beside them or in the other lane was going they did too. I have seen it here too if the light isn't on that must be mean I can go

Then there are some ppl just don't see the light even when it is on..

I don't know that it can be applied like that on 4 lane highways. When the lights go out on 72 (university) from time to time, nobody stops if they are on 72.

Sounds like State Troopers just need to give out a few hundred tickets (on Hwy 72) and folks would get the msg. Obviously, Huntsville Police aren't doing anything about it.

Yeah, that is the law here (I double checked recently) and normally people will do that naturally on smaller roads. On a big highway like that though everyone usually just zooms through and there's no hope for anyone trying to turn.

I was I565 near the airport on Tuesday and I saw sheriffs handing out tickets. There were 3 cars pulled over with another one going south to start again. They are out there I guess it depends on what dept is in charge.
