Huntsville, out of all of Alabama, would be the most tolerant. Not to say that there would be the typical ignorant fool running around...

Any city in Alabama should welcome you. Maybe not a rural area, but in cities you should be fine.
I occasionally see women with headcovers in Huntsville, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Can't say anything about Montgomery or Mobile because I don't spend much time there.

I have had several muslim female students that wore head coverings. They were some of the favorites among students and always appeared to be treated well. I see women with headcovers from time to time in the market or the mall. They always appear to be fine.

It depends. Do you believe in jihad?

I think the Huntsville area has people from all over the country. As such, most people are very open minded and accepting people of different culture and different faith. That said, this is still Alabama, a engineers town, conservative in nature, but loving & accepting in a Christian way.

So, if your family are peace-loving muslims, we welcome you!

The former prime minister of Libya was a former dean at UAH. He is well respected here. He and his whole family are Muslims ... and are peace loving.

You will occasionally get stares --- especially with the humidity around here in the summer.
There are many forms of the hijab ... I presume you are not referring to the one where only the eyes show?

Back on point: Huntsville does seem to be a reasonably tolerant place (from my perspective as a minority on several different axes), but the intolerant among us do not hesitate to use their right of free speech.

As a former Californian, my impression of Huntsville so far is very positive.

I bring positive feedback back to my fellow (and still) Californians and clarify many misconceptions. I may just bring a few more of those folks into town.

ps-
Don't kid yourself, racism & [reverse] discrimination are alive and well in many parts of California and North (I lived there before, that was my experience).

Wow, that's a real ignorant statement. Being Huntsville and north al is the most white and conservative part of the state.

It has a lower black population percentagewise than the rest of the state because slavery was significantly less common in north Alabama than south Alabama. In this respect Huntsville's black population largely reflects the settlement patterns you see outside the South (ie many if not most of the black people here have ancestors who moved to the area of their own free will once industries sprung up and provided jobs).

To the topic creator you know I think it would be a decent place as I was the guy who recommended it in some of your topics, but I think you can judge based on the other responses if Huntsville is right for you and your family.
