Recommended improvements below. I've lived here 5 months and I have a few suggestions (that being said, I'm enjoying my time here in the south immensely and HSV is growing on me!).

1. A drive-through coffee shop (Dunkin, Starbucks, Caribou..whatever!) by Wall-Triana and Madison Blvd. It's one of the busiest interstate exits, for heavens sake! The only option is McDonalds. Not awesome. I'd be happy with a drive-through coffee shop anywhere on Madison Blvd, to be honest!

2. Curbs and shoulders. It just looks better. We can be better than the non-curbed, non-shouldered streets! Speaking of shoulders, will someone please put one in on Slaughter? Terrifying.

3. 72 in Madison is a traffic nightmare. Plus, the aforementioned North-South parkway would be awesome - Hughes Road is endless and heaven forbid you hit it at school time. I come from the land of heavy traffic, but that is enough to make me say bad words.

That is all.

Help may be on the way:

Madison deciding on capital improvement projects

One of the ATRIP requests they'll be making is to 5-lane Hughes from Madison Blvd to Hwy 72. The odds are probably against it going thru, but this is the first indication I've ever seen from the Madison govt that they know there's a problem travelling north/south thru the city. And it's going to get a lot worse if Madison can't get it alleviated within the decade.

Who's going to pay for this?
I remember as a youngster, my parents were incensed when Decatur determined they were going to put in curbs on our street, and the property owners had to pay for it by assessment. They pointed to wealthier parts of town where there were no curbs (and still aren't). I agree, though, it looks better and the road wears better.

Built as a country lane...still is, although it's not country anymore.

5 lanes on Hughes would be amazing. I have no idea how they would swing that, especially around the schools and churches, but it would be fantastic. Thanks!

They could add lanes to Hughes Road, but a lot of people are going to complain because they will lose their sidewalks and LOTS of people run/bike along Hughes Road.

They need to do something about Wall Triana IMO before they even look at Hughes. Wall Triana is a traffic nightmare.

I spent the weekend in Bham last weekend (specifically Mountain Brook/Homewood), and I'm never going to complain about our traffic again

I completely agree. There has to be some solution to the traffic nightmare at the 565 interchange. I think a county line exit will be a good first step. Unfortunately, Madison had a poorly planned infrastructure and it is much harder to fix mistakes than to grow responsibly. The key is for residents to voice their opinions to city leaders.

I disagree with this statement. Madison has grown just fine considering that just 30 years ago it had a 1/10th of the population it has now. I don't see how Madison, or any municipality for that matter, can tell businesses and residents "stop coming here until we get some money from the state to build infrastructure"

This isn't SimCity, where you can quickly fix a mistake just by blowing up a bunch of buildings and drop a 6-lane highway wherever you need it.

LOL, some people on here do seem to be people who are Sim City addicts. Everything can be controlled and planned.

I never saw much of a difference between Madison and Hampton Cove areas other than Madison has more people and stuff at this point. You will see the same problems in Hampton Cove if employers start locating over that way.

Madison has a lot better traffic than most places I lived. I never thought about it much when I lived there.
