Paying $5 a month for ESPN - which I NEVER watch - is galling enough. Actually, I may end up dropping Directv altogether and just watch live streams of news on the net and pay another dime to Exede for more bandwidth to cover.
Its Raycom not WAFF

<shrug> Since I can't get any of the other Raycom stations, WAFF is Raycom for me. Just checked with Directv and they can't supply an NBC feed under FCC regulations. LOL! Oh well, the world will have to wait another few weeks to come to an end.

Of course if you are really desperate you could put up an antenna and watch WAFF (48) for free over the air.
This was also mentioned in another recent CD thread: Dish vs DirectTV

I never understood why cable and satellite companies have to pay to carry a channel that's FREE... I remember the old DirecTV boxes had a option to plug in a antenna in back of the receiver so you could watch the local channels. DirecTV should add the option again to the newer receivers.

I think it boils down to distribution and who makes money. Homes that watch those channels OTA for free aren't making money. Cable/DTV/Dish make money off of carrying those same free stations.

For example, many programs are "free" for non-commercial use. But for a business to use those programs/applications, they charge money. Why? Because that business is making money, and that program or application helps them do so.

They do. You can get an AM-21 and hook up an antenna to your receiver.

An older but very interesting article from the WSJ:

Local TV Stations Face a Fuzzy Future - WSJ

Raycom pays NBC to be an "affiliate". DTV wants to carry NBC. In the end, DTV I suppose could pay NBC directly to have NBC content, minus the local news.

I think though that DTV can't show other NBC stations because of the FCC.

I don't get a few of the comments... on DirecTV there is still an NBC from the west feed...it's not local but it's still nbc, right? 392 & 393 on the High Def channels. I think the same or nearby on reg.
