Is $18 per linear foot for a 6 ft tall, arched top, shadow-box fence a reasonable price?

to have it stained (as opposed to leaving it natural) is $7/foot. is that a lot, cheap, about right?

Quote for aluminum is $36/linear foot.

I honestly have no idea, so can anyone enlighten me??

Thanks!

They'll stain the fence right after its put up, and thats usually not a good idea. Having the wood weather about 4-6 months is ideal, then apply the stain.

A few years ago I've gotten quotes for $17/ft to build fence so $18/ft sounds about right today. Of course the devil is in the details. Be sure to specify what you want, e.g., number of gates, slopping yard, etc.

For staining I have gotten quote as inexpensive as $2 per linear foot.

there is a fence company that runs ads on CL all the time. They are in TN but say they cross into ALA. I haven't used them, just saying.

Your fence quote sounds about right but the quote for staining sounds really high.....who did you check with?

Creative Containment and Affordable Fence are two really good companies with pretty competitive prices. Also, agree with NoleFan that it is typically better to let the wood weather about 6 months before you stain it although I know in some neighborhoods since the fence has to be stained that is not possible.

When I used to sell paint/stains that is what we used to recommend for arsenic based pressure treated wood. It appears the newer pressure treated lumber only requires a month or two of weathering before putting up the stain.

In my neighborhood the HOA allows for this. My neighbor had his fence stained almost two days after it was up, and it looks terrible. The stain never really got into the wood at all.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but we have an arched shadowbox fence around our backyard as well, and I'm looking to replace about 200 of the boards. The fence (~6 years old) was never stained, so it's looking really worn (and our HOA is getting onto us about it).

I'd like to replace the boards instead of power-washing/stripping the old ones. I was thinking of buying new cedar boards and pre-staining (and sealing, in necessary) them in batches in the garage before ripping the old ones down and putting them up. Advisable or not?

Better to use screws or nails?

Also, I can't figure out the best way to cut the arch. It looks like the original builders cut the arches freehand with a circular saw after they were nailed up. What's the best way to cut the arch for a shadowbox fence?

Coog

jamsAlot - thanks for your comments and cautions. Can you tell us about what makes a good fence (in terms of materials and construction)?

Very neighborly of you.
