Due to the Federal Hiring Freeze, our relocation back from Germany has been put on hold 'until further notice'.

We were fortunate, but are hearing some real horror stories.

Some people have left their jobs, moved out or sold their houses, shipped their household goods and vehicles, and are now stuck in limbo without a paycheck.

Just came across this news article and had to share:

Will Trump's hiring freeze hurt a federal city like Huntsville?
Will Trump's hiring freeze hurt a federal city like Huntsville? | AL.com

One rebuttal to the article, just because "national defense and public safety can be excluded" doesn't mean it is being excluded. It is open to interpretation and some organizations are known for their knee-jerk reactions.

This quote from the linked article pretty well sums up my feelings on the matter.

"I am concerned about its impact on Tennessee Valley jobs on the one hand," Brooks said. "But I also have a greater concern about America suffering from a debilitating insolvency and bankruptcy if we don't get our spending under control.

A hiring freeze just means more expensive contractors will be hired to fill the role. Technically against the rules but it just requires some creative wording in the contract. The freeze should disappear within 90 days and be replaced with something else less prohibitive. I know of at least two people who were supposed to start this past Monday and are on hold pending further guidance.

Speaking of that, the DoD just implemented a new Policy and Procedure for Reductions in Force in the Civilian Workforce on January 19th, 2017.

I remember reading somewhere that Redstone Arsenal experienced a major RIF back in the 70's?

IIRC RSA (and / or MSFC) has had some form of RIFs in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s... There was a major NASA layoff in the 1970s that devastated much of the town. Even some of the nice houses downtown were turned into hippy apartments.

Sorry you're in limbo, but I think that this should sort itself out soon.

Thanks Reactionary, it appears you are right as OMB/OPM just released more details in the Federal Civilian Hiring Freeze Guidance.

Those downtown hippy apartments must have been quite a sight.

Thanks for the guidance. Do you fit in the Section 3.m. window?

Yeah, the houses were in terrible shape, the yards were overgrown, and the interiors were a chopped up mess. It was very different from the overpriced nicely renovated well groomed historically significant neighborhood we see now.

Oh ... they're still around. There are 2 beautiful houses down from me (well ... I'm sure they used to be beautiful) that are now made up of 4 apartments each. I would love to see inside one, just to see how they transformed them.
