Huntsville is at least twice the size it was when the current building was constructed. I'm not sure how much you can get for $20 .... Let's hope he doesn't ruin the skyline though ... presumably the current building would be demolished after the new one across the street is finished, so the new one needs to be taller and better.

Some bylaws on the books say that downtown buildings cannot be over a certain number of stories... I think that number is 7, but I could be wrong... and it is to keep the skyline 'clean'...

That's about as dumb as towns that don't sell beer on Sundays...

I think that was rescinded to only apply to areas where taller buildings would overwhelm and block sunlight to the older residential areas, like Twickenham. Also pretty sure it was 10 stories ... there are several buildings around taller than 7. I think most areas they can go as high as desired now.

If you are not smart enough to stock up on Saturday, then do you really need to be drinking at all?

Correct, there is a buffer zone along the residential side of downtown of 3-4 stories. Outside of that, including almost all of downtown, there is no height limit. This is one of the first things Battle did when he became mayor, prior to him the limit was 10 stories.

A new city hall is sorely needed. Aside from the falling slabs of granite and hit or miss working elevators, the layout just doesn't work for a city our size. $20M seems awfully cheap though specially if you are factoring in a new parking deck.

It does indeed. Most likely, they would need about twice the floor space that the current building has (if needed space is proportional to population). I'm sure final costs will be considerably higher than that.

I kinda like the way the current building looks though.

Might be a good use for the old Joe Davis stadium site!
