We lived in Connecticut when this started. The first year we were up there, we had no family and not a lot of friends. But the local Chinese place was open, and was really good. "Open Christmas Day" was the sign on the road. So we decided that's what we would do. My wife wouldn't have too cook, nothing to clean, would be funny. Green Tea was the name of the place, amazing Peking Duck.
The next year my teenage son had two friends and they wanted to join us, so we now had 5. They came with us through graduation. It was our new tradition.
In Huntsville we don't have the options, but we've managed to do it 8/10 years we have lived here. One year we did it in Cincinnati - didn't find a great place. Last year - Chicago - WOW! We went to a new level of awesome Chinese food (Still not as good as Green Tea), but really good.
If we weren't dog sitting this year we were thinking of going to Nashville to visit the kid with his bride, but alas, they are going back to Chicago to see the in-laws
Christmas Story, Midnight Mass, and Chinese for Christmas dinner, love this tradition.

I am not a huge IHOP fan either. The place that nails the same IHOP atmosphere is Denny's, and they will be open on Christmas. I might just change plans and go there this year.
