We had 50 of them in back of our house so I was thrilled that I could see them at Wheeler. Also, you will learn that Alabama is one of the most active bird migration routes hence the AL Birding Trail all over the state. I have even met people that moved here to see the birds - real bird watchers!
Will remember to do that next time...signed up for mailing from the local all-things-bird store but have only gotten one flyer so far...
Husband loves Sandhill Cranes, too. Used to comment every time he'd see one one the way to work (S. FL). Location was out in the boonies...
We had a Bush Wildlife Center near us in Jupiter where we brought more than one wayward/injured critter, and I have a fondness for such shelters anyway after some teenage community service at another facility.

The odd sites section is a hoot, and the surprising effect of latex paint on the boxes compared to whitewash is interesting. Could part of global warming simply be that people no longer know how to whitewash?

The photos of the instrumentation boxes brought back some memories. My dad used to be in charge of one at a radio station. The box sat in front of the station on a small grassy area in the middle of a circular drive. I had to just check on a different computer to look at some old photos and yep, the box sat directly underneath a big deciduous tree - Elm if I recall correctly. Since the Elms all died of Dutch Elm disease, I'd bet that station now sits in the open. What used to be a hoot to me though is that the station sat on a hill (radio antennas like height) that was a good 350 feet higher than the town, and subject to winds that didn't make it into the valley. However, that was the "official" temperature of the town.

I've been asked before if I would run for President. Sorry, I'm too smart.
