First...unlock your caps key. Athens is a great small city. All the city schools are excellent. Don't know about apartments, but the housing is extremely reasonable there. Not so at Providence...housing is VERY expensive, at least by local standards. You've got basic shopping in Athens, but Huntsville is very close. Have you thought about Decatur? A visit to see for yourself would orient you the best. You could also get a subscription to the local newspaper, the Athens News-Courier.

The East Limestone area is between Athens and Huntsville, convenient to both cities. It seems to be a popular area and would be my pick if moving to Athens. But I also like the Clements area West of Athens, more of a rural setting and Clements is a pretty good school The Providence area like Southlander said is pretty expensive for this neck of the woods. Home prices start around 300,000 and go up.

"sounds like Huntsville is not in the running......"

Hold on now... There's plenty of affordable housing in Huntsville and good schools too. Grissom and Huntsville HS (and all feeder schools) consistently rank high academically. And the new Columbia High is supposedly pretty good as well although too new to have any rankings. Butler, Lee, and Johnson High Schools are supposedly the "bad" schools. Although, coincidentally I graduated from Butler in the early 90s and I turned out okay. And quite frankly, I appreciate the unsheltered life lessons I learned by attending an "inner city" type of school. But that's just me.

But you can still find homes in the 100-150K range in great neighborhoods in the city limits of Huntsville. And I think people coming here are usually surprised at just how nice our city is with very little blight and crime compared to say...well I won't point fingers. But you get my point.

Sealy Realty owns Highland Pointe apartments near Providence. Nice places, good company. Their website said 3 BRs at just under $1000/month. Your husband's commute each way would generally be against traffic, so to get to Athens on 72 should take 20 minutes, tops. (I used to be on the Apt. Assn. board here and never worked for Sealy - unbiased opinion.)

Welcome!

I'm from Huntsville now live in the Clements area of Athens -
If your husband is going to be working in Athens - I'd suggest Athens -
I love Huntsville it's my home - very peaceful small city environment in
Athens and your husband would probably tire of driving the distance -
Pretty much whatever you decide you'll love the area.

I like Athens -- it is a lovely area and the historic section is very friendly. If that is where your husband is working, I'd check it out... if you haven't already... looks like the original post was a long time ago.
