I have heard that the subscription to local produce -- here in Athens, Angel Foods Ministries, but there are quite a few in Huntsville -- are great for getting local and FRESH produce, including meat, cheese, and, of course, vegetables.

What do you mean by a subscription? Is it like a coop?

I swear by grow Alabama, found at Grow Alabama - Our vegetables and meats are affordable and can be delivered to your home or office

You pay a monthly subscription price and they deliver. It allows you to customize your box each week. You still end up long on whatever the farmer is, right now it is winter squash varieties-good thing we like them and they keep!!

I also like the Madison city farmers market-saturdays 8-noon on Hughes road next to BJS. Prices are a bit higher than grow Alabama, but you won't get mystery squash...we like that, it forces us to try new things.

Personally I don't care for coops since you have to take what is available.

As for the meat, I have a provision on my insurance for that, no deductible coverage up to $500. You might want to look into that.
