Welcome to the area and thank you for your willingness to help out kids! My wife and I are foster parents in Madison County. To answer your question, I don't believe so. The link below is the standards in AL. To become foster parents, you will need to take a 10 week class called GPS. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you!

We went through the GPS training last year. I think they only have the training starting in August and January. It's very eye-opening about the lack of love that a lot of kids here in Madison County receive. It's hard, and I don't think it's for everyone, but if you've got lots of love and patience to share, then it's very worthwhile.

RE adopting when you already have birth children;

Usually it is suggested that you don't rearrange the birth order. If you add children to your family, it's best to adopt children younger than your birth children, so that the older children in your family won't feel displaced. There are lots of other reasons - what has the adopted child been exposed to/experienced?

We adopted internationally in 1997, but the same issues applied then. Our a-child was 5 1/2 at the time of her placement.

My DS inlaws were foster parents and they were in their late 60s or maybe even 70s. However they only took in babies IIRC. They had one baby who was strapped in a car seat all the time and couldn't crawl or sit up. So sad..

My DS was a foster parent for over 25 years.. It is a tough job but a very rewarding one. Let us know how it goes.
