Noel's center was about 240 miles southeast of Miami. The storm was nearly stationary, but was expected to turn to the north away from Florida later in the day and speed away from the U.S. over the Bahamas. It had top sustained winds near 50 mph, up from 40 mph earlier in the day, forecasters said.
Wind and waves washed out beaches from Jacksonville to Miami and threatened a handful of coastal structures Wednesday, but damage so far was minimal as Tropical Storm Noel's worst effects were expected to spare Florida.
The National Weather Service warned strong, gusty winds swirling between Noel and a high-pressure system over the East Coast would continue buffeting Florida through Thursday. Noel was expected to skirt the state's coast over the next day or two, and tropical storm warnings may be needed, the National Hurricane Center said.
