It feels nice outside right now. There is a sustained wind and lightning. I don't remember lightning in past hurricanes. FYI the weatherman just said it's getting ready to make landfall at Cape Lookout.

Interesting. Watching Jim Cantore on the beach. 60mph+ sustained must feel interesting yet scary especially here with the trees not used to it.. I had gusts over that but never experienced sustained.

While the system is over land and even the eye wall, technically speaking they take the "center" of the storm and where it made landfall. See that little tip there? That would be the official landfall

Here's the radar and winds..

#1. Even though the storm is pulling away and missing most of the state from a hit If that center goes over that island there it will be considered a landfall.

#2. Those 70-100mph winds off the ocean are pushing all that water on shore. Storm surge must be high.

#3. It's clear and calm right now near Moorehead city. They are in the eye. No Rain. That's the most amazing feeling. I was in the eye for Gloria in 1985. Everyone was out and about then the heavy wind and rain started again.

Darn it, my picture hosting site wont play animated GIFs.

This sucks for those who were planning to vacation there this July 4th weekend. Hopefully most vacationers stayed home instead.

Official word from hunters.

Landfall was Shackleford Banks, NC 11:15pm. Just north of Cape Lookout.

Cape Lookout reported 101mph wind! Might be a record of some kind.

It was moving northeast and then last few minutes jogged back north and that's when it made landfall. Storms naturallly wobble. Will turn northeast again now.

Reading about the smell of snapped pines down there.

You see the stronger colors south of center? The reds & oranges? Thats where the strongest winds are. Now look to the east side you can see like 5 or 6 seperate bands which are rotating in. They typically carry the strongest gusts especially near the center.

Arthur affecting White Mountains:

Overnight, what remains of Hurricane Arthur will move northeast along the coast rotating in bands of moderate to heavy rain and additional thunderstorms. Winds will ramp up prior to the hurricanes passage but it will be a tight pressure gradient setting up on its backside that will bring the strongest gusts occurring overnight into Saturday. Gusts on the summit are expected to reach as high as 100 mph at the height of the storm before gradually lowering late in the day as high pressure from the southwest slowly builds in.
