Pet food recalls (paid, date, to work)

I've been hanging out in the pets section of CD lately, and just heard about a wide recall of pet foods and treats that may be dog and cat killers. The cause of many reported pet deaths is uncertain from what I was able to gather, but the ingredient may be melanine from China, the same stuff that was killing babies in India earlier this year and last. It was found in some baby formulas.

I don't know what the stuff does, but it apparently causes renal failure in dogs and cats. The latest recall notice was Nov. 15th, but includes an earlier bunch of recalls that date back to about 2007. This one seems to feature dog and cat treats more than daily chow. There are some respected spendy brands on the list.

I never feed my pets treats, so this was totally under my radar. I know, though, that lots of Idahoans have dogs and cats, so I thought I would mention it here.

I will dig into this further when I get to work tomorrow.. hey get paid for it and it's getting late However, from what I can gather just by reading the first paragraph is, in order to know when the exact initiation was for the recall, you must click on the particular brand/product. Anything relating to the massive recall of foods processed by Menu foods back to 2007 & 2008 will continue to be listed and then they also update as information is rendered. It does not mean that it's entirely about Melamine deriving from China, however due to the size of that recall back in '07/'08 it is a huge chunk of it.

When in doubt contact the manufacturer directly. Having said that, I am not stating any inaccuracy on the FDA link, it's just easier to see the date of recall on the manufacturer's website than it is on the FDA one.

Furthermore, read your pet food labels, you might be frightened if you actually know what's in some of these products. I am glad to say that none of our products have ever been recalled and we also have a gentleman through the State that periodically stops by. If we have something new (and we screen things well) he'll by it and have it tested, plus he also keeps us up to date on anything that might not have passed my screen yet.

Yes, stay away from chicken jerky from China. They've had warnings out for over a year, but as far as I can tell they don't know yet exactly what the harmful ingredient is. Thanks, Mike.
