Anyone in Idaho willing to go through this again (raise your hand)

New Aryan Compound In North Idaho? - Huckleberries Online - Spokesman.com - Nov. 27, 2012

SPLC Intelligence Report: Neo-Nazi Building White Supremacist Compound in Idaho - PR Newswire - The Sacramento Bee

The exact location seems to be different in each of these news stories. Anyone know where and the bigger question, WHY?

First I have heard of this. Seems to be a tiny operation. While the Sac Bee is a pretty reliable source, sometimes stories like this make the news just because they advance a stereotype. Local media, mainly Spokane, will either drop this off their radar, or expand. Time will tell.

As to why? Because this has been an area where these fringe groups have made news before. And because they are relatively isolated from diversity in the United States. (read: they are afraid to be anywhere else, for good reason). Hopefully, authorities are on top of this, if true, and will take actions to shut it down quickly.

BTW, I wouldn't call this an "invasion" at this juncture. Not until we know more.

FWIW, not a Bee story.

This section contains unedited press releases distributed by PR Newswire. These releases reflect the views of the issuing entity and are not reviewed or edited by the Sacramento Bee staff. This is disgusting. Idaho chased these bigots out before. Why are they coming back?

Oh no, not again! So he's the racist who tried to run for sheriff...
But it sounds as if he has enough legal problems for that "compound" to remain a fantasy. One can always hope...

I can't figure out the location, either:
Neo-Nazi Builds North Idaho Compound to Replace Defunct Aryan Nations | Southern Poverty Law Center
Quote:
McKnight shot pictures of Winkler waving a campaign sign along a roadway. But he also finagled an invitation to visit Winkler’s compound, located in a rural, mountainous area southeast of the Priest River, for a family barbecue and cross burning. He ultimately made three visits to Winkler’s property.
If that's the place in question (on Hoodoo Mt.), then it's nowhere near the old Butler compound by Hayden Lake (unless journalists think that Blanchard is right next to Hayden Lake).
Idaho Places, Hoodoo Mountain in Bonner County

As for the "Why," That's the best answer I can come up with right now...

This article made me think of a memory I had. I lived in the Pacific Northwest for a few years(Seattle area). I'm African-American. We were driving across the country and it was the early 1990s. My parents didn't want to stop in Northern Idaho because of its reputation for Neo-Nazis.

That's the dude who ran for sheriff. He has an "empire"? What, him and his daughter? What a crock. The
Southern Poverty Law Center is the real hate group IMO.

How is SPLC a hate group?

I think this story will suffer a quick death. Thanks for the Sac Bee explanation. Though, the Bee should be responsible for EVERYTHING they print. Just for the record.

Silly city people think that a pickup truck full of firewood stuck in the mud is an odd excuse.

Also, there are no Hoodoo Mountains in Bonner County. It's one mountain named Hoodoo.

Obviously I think Shaun Winkler is a depraved horse's backside and I wish he'd go back to where he came from. Idaho in general and Priest River in particular don't need his ilk trying to get into the newspapers.
