PHOENIX - Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio's hardline stance on illegal immigrants has given him a national profile. But a backlash from angry Latinos is turning his bid for re-election into the toughest of his long career.

Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio's re-election bid divides county

Not sure what a so-called "hardline" stance on illegal immigrants is. Why are citizen Latinos angry?

I don't know. I live in Phoenix and in 2012, there ain't that many illegal aliens like in 2006. I'm guessing many Chicanos have "skin in this game" like friends or family who are illegal.

^this. The Burger King theory about our laws. I'll obey this one but I don't want that one so I'll not abide by it. Those laws being immigration laws and thinking "Have it your way".

How would you determine if someone was an illegal alien in 2006?...

Nativists have special skills that allow them to determine someone's ethnicity and immigration status just by looking at them.

I don't know off hand but; I def hear less Spanish and see less scruffy looking Mexicans here in 2012 than in 2006. Most illegal aliens ARE Mexican and many of the other "brown" Hispanic illegals say they're "Mexican" to avoid long distance deportation.

Good point. A time machine maybe ? That being said, Joe Arpaio has been sheriff for 20 years, and, he's
still doing the same thing he did in 2006. The big thing is that the focus on illegals has changed in the
last 6 years. HB1070 brought it all to the attention of the nation & Joe loves the "limelight". to top it all
off, he ****-d off a lot of the local politicans.

Ole Joe still has his tent city, pink prisoner garb & chain gangs. Tent city even has a vacancy sign from
& old motel that flashes on and off. What's amazing is, a lot of the people in the jail support him. lol

Sort of, lol, the legal Mexicans are getting sick of being pulled over, stopped while riding their bikes to work and asked for legal citizenship. They were born here and are American. It get's irritating. That's the skin issue I think your forgetting about. You must not have skin in the game.

Joe's a lying cheating bastard besides that. He obviously thought he could get away with anything due to his popularity.

They're not pulled over and stopped unless they're doing something that anyone else would be stopped for, like riding in vehicle traffic, not using a crosswalk to cross the street, riding on a sidewalk, appearing to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, riding recklessly, etc. The best way to avoid being stopped is to obey all laws.
