As a sweeping immigration overhaul is debated in Congress, The Washington Post takes a look back at 30 years of U.S. immigration policy. From President Reagan to present day, we hear from politicians, policymakers and those whose citizenship hangs in the balance.

I haven't seen much in the way of "reform" in the 1986 amnesty signed by Reagan nor the pending bill today. Reform means changes to our laws. Amnesty does not change our immigration laws. It merely rewards those who break them. It would still be a violation of our immigration laws to come here without permission and we would still be enforcing those laws aka detection, detention and deportation.

Thus the word evolution in quotes. It hasn't evolved.

I saw nothing in your link about "evolution". What exactly does that mean in regards to giving amnesty to illegal aliens once again? The pro-illegals call it reform. As I said, there is no reform of our immigration laws in the pending bills just amnesty/legalization of those here illegally already. We would still enforce our immigration laws in the future and coming here illegally would still be illegal.

It was ironic, thus the quotes. every time somebody yells immigration reform, it results in amnesty, then "enforcing" the laws. Nothing improves then they do the same thing again, amnesty and "enforcing" the laws.

I think I have the best solution. Remove all the incentives to remain here and to continue to come here. If they are truly only here to work as the pro-illegals keep telling us and the job incentives are removed doesn't it make sense that they would self-deport? Of oourse we would have to take it two steps futher by removing any benefits they may receive for themselves or their U.S. born kids by changing birthright citizenship. Unfortunately, only a few patriots in congress have the courage to make these changes in policy. The rest want to remain PC for votes or want the cheap, illegal labor to remain here. None of my solutions would involve enforcing our immigration laws per se nor would it involve any amnesty.

In short, eliminate demand, supply dries up. I agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, people who hire the illegals suffer no consequences.

Well in all fairness some of them have. The biggest problem is proving that they "knowingly" hired illegals to work for them. In big companies especially it is the HR Dept. that hires them not the owner. They are provided with some very legitimate looking fake documents. I have read of some cases where the HR person knew they were illegals but looked the other anyway. The only way to rein in this abuse by both the HR and the owners is to implement e-verify across the aboard. What gets me is when people in here blame the employers only. They won't put any blame on the illegals themselves when they are both equally guilty of breaking the law.

Correct you are and that is why we need E-Verify to be passed into law. As for Joe homeowner to cheap to hire a licensed contractor? To sad to bad, he knowingly opted to hire an unknown and should be held accountable for it.
