LEts twist things around a little and re-write this story from a different perspective:

The US treasury dept, a Federal dept based in Washington, concluded that Bank robbers across the country, and in particular career criminals, are increasingly concerned about staying employed and being arrested.

According to the treasury dept's annual national survey of criminals, nearly two-thirds of bank robbers said their lives have worsened over the last year and nearly as many fear that they, their relatives or their friends could be arrested at any time and sent to prison.

“There has been significant deterioration in the mood of bank robbers,” said Susan Minushkin, the center's deputy director. “gang bosses in particular are much more pessimistic.”

Respondents indicated that increased societal tensions have made them targets of civic discrimination and that's why they've had a harder time finding and robbing banks and homes.

Additionally, 10 percent of bank robbers said they were stopped by law enforcement officers and asked about their probation status. That was the first time the question has been asked, so it's unknown if that is a trend or not.

Most answers varied in percentage depending on whether respondents said they used a gun or not, but all criminals showed vehement opposition to the government's ongoing arrest crackdown.

Eight out of ten are against local police acting as immigration enforcers and nearly just as many disapproved of bank branch raids. Majorities also opposed the criminal prosecution of unauthorized bank theft and the gangs who hire them.

Opposition levels decreased when respondents were asked about a voluntary program allowing banks to check government databases for the icriminal status of potential robbers. Fifty-eight percent of U.S-born bank robbers don't support employers signing up, while 63 percent of robbers don't like the idea.

“This is the only enforcement measure where we find a difference between native- and foreign-born robbers,” Minushkin said.

Regarding fears of deportation, 53 percent of criminals said they worried “a lot” about it, up from 43 percent last year.

After all, people rob banks bacuse they want a better life...right?

Great analogy....it will probably annoy some folks (most analogies seem to), but it sounds annoying ONLY because it sounds 'sarcastic', by making an analogy to illegal immigration as a "crime". Problem IS, it IS a crime.

I'm sure, as you suggest, that people who DO rob banks do indeed do so, in order to "have a better life"....whether that life is "better" because it's free of the drudgery of steady work, because the 'payoff' is tax-free, or whatever...in any case, bank robbers are obviously 'out to better themselves'. I'm ALSO quite certain that many bank robbers are also "nice" people MOST of the time (other than having one unfortunate bad habit), that they have families, that the large majority of them never actually HURT anyone, and that they don't WANT to annoy people..they just want to get money. I see LOTS of parallels here.

Still, I must warn you..you'll probably get a lot of "flack" for your post. It may make a lot of people uncomfortable. Not because your analogy is flawed, exactly...more because lots of people have some very odd priorities.

Let's not leave out tax evaders....or shoplifters.... or bad check writers.....or car thieves.

Everyone just wants to have a better life, most crimes that are committed are just about someone wanting a better life in some way or another. Why does someone shoplift? To have something they want is why but they disregard the laws. Same for tax cheats, they simply want a better life.

For the record:

I strongly suspect that the IRS is a hidden partner in the effort to nail/deport illegals..............

Why I say that is at least six (6) people (all Americans) who I know have been audited by the IRS-----------most likely that agency is simply using a 'big net' to avoid charges of 'racial profiling'.

There's only ONE group you've missed..(don't worry..it's a very SMALL group)..and these are those unfortunate people who suffer from Masochism, AND who decide to become illegal immigrants. THESE people go to great effort to leave affluent Western nations, and illegally sneak into poor third-world dictatorships, because they want to decrease their standard of living, and are searching for a worse life....therefore they seek out places where they often make LESS money in a WEEK, than they do in a DAY back home.

As I said, there are VERY few of these "anti-illegals", and they don't cause NEARLY the problems that illegals do. Also, there is medication available for their condition, unlike 'regular' illegals.
