Latin stars slam Arizona's new immigration law | Story | Wonderwall (http://wonderwall.msn.com/movies/latin-stars-slam-arizonas-new-immigration-law-1549036.story - broken link)

Ricky Martin: "Equality is understanding that we all come from the same place. Racial profiling should never be tolerated, in the U.S. or anywhere in the world. We're moving backwards. Scary."

Eva Langoria and George Lopez also speak out against the immigration bill.

This is just day 3.

I do not (and never will) support 'racial profiling'. If that's what's involved in the new Arizona law, then I don't support it. But I wonder if that's what it really is.

We all know that the LAPD has a HUGE gang problem. We know that they conduct periodic 'sweeps', stings, and 'busts'; we also know that the vast majority of people 'caught up' in these sweeps are young Latino and black males. 75 years ago, most 'gang types' in the US were overwhelmingly Irish and Italian...today, they're overwhelmingly Latino, as well as black. If you're going after the gang bangers, you're going to confront a certain number of Latinos and blacks. That's not opinion...that's demographics.

SO...is this an example of 'rooting out gang-bangers'? Or is it an example of 'profiling Hispanics and blacks'? You hear both takes....but I've seldom heard any rational speaker claim that the 'anti-gang' program(s) are 'anti-Hispanic'. A few say so, but most do not.

Are there illegals here in the US? Obviously..millions. Are they mostly Hispanic? Yes; that's just 'geography'. SO...does 'looking for illegals' mean the same as 'harrassing all Hispanics'? Some would say so; others would disagree.

I am in favor of controlling illegal immigration; in so doing, I realize many of the people involved will be Hispanics. I am not in favor (and never will be) of 'harrassing' Hispanics, (or any other ethnic group).

So...can we "do" one, without "doing" the other? I don't know...but I sure hope so.

i would agree, but it does raise the question of how you identify illegals.

with thugs and gang members there are colors, tattoos, clothing styles(including hats, shoes, brands), numbers, even coded language that are used to idenfiy them. so essentially they are going after thugs or those who think they are thugs. with illegals, what signifiers exists? can we tell by the type of shoes they wear? do they don specific colors? are there tattoos only for them? how do you figure out whos who?
as someone who has been around gangs [and illegals] for decades, i know how not to look like a thug. sadly thats what we have to do in these parts of town. dont look like a thug (regardless of age). but how does one not look like an illegal? thats the part i dont get.

This should come as no surprise to anyone. Hispanics like them are spewing this nonsense everywhere.

There is no outward appearance that someone is illegal. Repeating once again that if someone is stopped for an infraction of the law or suspicion of one if they can't produce valid I.D. then and only then can their status in this country be questioned by LE.

thats not what the bill says.

im all for going after criminals. i support doing what LA, Orange and other counties in CA do. once processed at the county jail, they verify everyones citizenship. im fine with that. but this is even before committing a crime. if they think i am unlawfully present in the US they can stop me. how do they figure out who to stop?

You would be incorrect about what the bill states.

The putative 'Hispanic' community needs to shut the hell up in light of Mexico's strict immigration laws and very UN 'PC' means of law enforcement against illegal aliens.

If nothing else: said Hispanics are making themselves look more and more stupid by the day-------and, they wonder why prejudice is growing. If anything; the terms 'Hispanic/Latino' are fast becoming pejorative--------it is becoming an insult to refer to a 'brown' Anglo as such, even if accidently.
