Indigenous immigrants to be counted in 2010 Census - Yahoo! News

On question 8, right after "Native American" there will be a line provided. Indigenous Immigrants will be able to write the name of their tribe in that line.

Quote:
The Census Bureau wants to change that in the 2010 count as it tallies immigrant indigenous groups for the first time ever, hoping to get a more complete snapshot of a growing segment of the immigrant population.
In the 2010 Census, the bureau will tabulate handwritten entries specifying that the respondent belongs to a Central American indigenous group such Maya, Nahua, Mixtec, or Purepecha. The list of different populations that end up being counted will be made public when results are released in 2011, said Michele Lowe, spokeswoman for the Census Bureau.
"We're always striving to present an accurate portrait of the American people, and this is part of that effort," said Lowe.

Quote:
An accurate count is important to the indigenous groups themselves, and to the federal government, which allocates resources to state and local government according to the results.
The U.S. Department of Labor estimates indigenous migrants make up about 17 percent of the country's farm workers, and may represent up to 30 percent of California's farm worker population. Florida also has a large indigenous immigrant population.
Indigenous organizations are independently working within their own communities to dispel apprehension and encourage participation in the federal survey. They speak many different languages, making a single educational campaign impossible. Some speak Spanish; some not at all.
Many have encountered discrimination in their home countries because of their indigenous origin, and in this country for their immigrant status. All this makes them less likely to volunteer sensitive personal information to a government agency.
It is my opinion that indigenous immigrants are descriminated for the same reasons they are discrimintated in the country of origin. You cannot tell the status of an immigrant by simply looking at them. I have know indigenous immigrants that are perfectly legal and speak, dress the same way as one who does not have legal status.

Times are changing and so are the demographics of this country. It is time to include those that have not been counted in the past, even if they dont have legal status.

"The Constitution requires that the number of members each state sends to the U.S. House of Representatives be based its share of the nation's population. Article I Section 2 of the Constitution further specifies that the number of seats in the House (as set by the Congress) are to be distributed proportionally among the states on the basis of a census to be conducted every ten years"

The idea of one state losing a representitive because of an increase of another states population gain is acceptable to me.....but if that gain is due to an influx of illegal aliens......no way.....While the Constitution may be just another law that gets in the way to some....it has worked (when enforced rather than misinterpreted) pretty well..

Maybe it is time to change another country's Constitutuin

That is a whole different issue borderlord. We can disagree with legalizing illegal immigrants but the fact is, it is very important to count the indigenous population that lives in our nation even if a percentage of them are illegal.

Zacatecana, if this "count" were to reduce one states number of reps in DC, in favor of another states, and it were due to counting "illegals" , would that be fair to the citizens of the state who lost their representation ?

And why the importance of counting the "indigenous population " ?

I think the govt needs to find a new dictionary frankly.

Indigenous peoples are those that are NATIVE to that locality - you CANNOT be both indigenous AND an immigrant - sorry.

If what they are TRYING to say is that they want to track the ORIGINAL ethnicity of immigrants that's different.

Native Americans from Central or South America are NOT indigenous to THIS country - period

Flip side: an American; born/raised here in the USA of 100% Irish lineage several generations down the line would not have any special rights in Ireland if visiting there without permission from Dublin. He would be a wet-back there.

Besides: back to our illegal aliens from Mexico; that 'indigenous' claptrap would not apply to those Mexicans of mostly or full Euro White heritage.

The European borders didn't necessarily apply to the people who lived here before they were made. Indigenous Americans are the people who lived on this continent before the English and Spanish carved it up.

Times are indeed changing: if here illegally------------leave! Hostility is growing against illegal aliens.
